DIGITALIZATION OF VOLUNTEER ACTIVITIES OF ELDERLY PEOPLE AS A FACTOR OF INCLUSION IN SOCIAL LIFE
Abstract
Emergency situations (COVID-19 pandemic, russia’s war with Ukraine) and related events unfold during the widespread development of digital technologies.The article, based on the results of its own empirical research, examines the potential of digital technologies in the implementation of the functions of elderly volunteers, in particular volunteer detachments of the Council of Labor Veterans and the territorial center for the provision of social services operating in emergency situations, analyzes the impact of digitalization on the volunteer practices of elderly people and the intensity of their impact on the social inclusion of the latter. The purpose of the study is the need to understand the problems of elderly people acquiring digital competencies for the development of volunteer activity as a form of social inclusion.Research methodology. To implement the task, an integrated research design was used: a com- bination of qualitative and quantitative research methods.As an empirical basis, a series of in-depth interviews were conducted with volunteers, managers and leaders of volunteer groups of elderly people (n = 18). By gender, the respondents are 84.7% women and 15.7% men, by areas of education – humanitarian (60.4%), technical (39.6%).As an additional method, document analysis, secondary analysis of data obtained in past proj- ects and data obtained through questionnaires (n=176) were used. Age range of respondents: from 60 to 80 years.The scientific novelty of the article lies in the fact that for the first time, through comprehensive research, data were obtained that allow establishing the possibilities of developing volunteer activi- ties of elderly people using digital technologies, and further development, scientific ideas were gained about ways to improve the forms and methods of social inclusion of elderly people in the conditions of digitalization of social processes.The conclusions of the study confirm the hypothesis that for certain groups of the population, such as the elderly, the digitalization of volunteer practices has become not only an opportunity to participate in volunteer activities, but also an important factor of inclusion in social life based on overcoming the risk of social exclusion associated with isolation caused by emergency situations (the COVID-19 pandemic and Russia’s full-scale war against Ukraine).
