THE INTELLECTUAL AND POLITICAL LEADERSHIP OF VOLODYMYR BONIFATIIOVYCH ANTONOVYCH IN THE FORMATION OF THE UKRAINIAN NATIONALIST MOVEMENT IN THE SECOND HALF OF THE 19TH CENTURY

Abstract

The article provides a comprehensive analysis of the activity of Volodymyr Bonifatiyo- vych Antonovych as an intellectual and political leader of the Ukrainophile movement in the second half of the nineteenth century. The study examines his role in shaping the cultural model of national development, the formation of Ukrainian political thought, and the intellectual foundations of modern nation-building within the Russian Empire. Particular attention is paid to the analysis of Antonovych’s activity as an organizer of the Ukrainian intellectual community and as an ideologist of the cultural strategy of the national movement. His participation in the activities of Ukrainian communities, his interaction with leading figures of the Ukrainian movement, and his influence on the formation of a new generation of Ukrainian historians and public intellectuals are also considered. The article analyzes the evolution of Antonovych’s political views, his concept of cultural mobilization of society, and his vision of the prospects for the development of the Ukrainian national move- ment. It is argued that Antonovych’s activity contributed significantly to the consolidation of the Ukrainian intellectual environment, the development of historical scholarship, and the formation of modern Ukrainian national identity. The study concludes that Antonovych should be considered not only as a historian and public figure but also as an intellectual leader who significantly influenced the ideological orientations of the Ukrainian national movement and contributed to the development of Ukrainian political thought during the modern period.
